On March 10, 1952 Captain George Thomas lost his life when the F-86A Sabre he was flying crashed in the forest. He was a WW II fighter pilot on a training mission out of Presque Isle Air Force Base. His crash site remains protected in the forest of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.  Thanks to Eric Hendrickson for the photos and description!
