Maine Ghost Train Convoy – Sign-up to See the Locomotives

Have you always wanted to take a trip to the abandoned Steam Locomotives deep in the North Maine Woods?   Now’s your chance!  On August 4th, Shane Morrison will lead a convoy of interested explorers to visit the abandoned trains near Eagle Lake.   Shane’s Facebook event is described as follows:

Maine's Lost Railroad
Maine’s Lost Railroad near Eagle Lake

Due to overwhelming interest, We are planning our first annual convoy to visit the abandoned trains near Eagle Lake. We would start the convoy in Winslow and have a couple places north of Winslow to meet with others who live further north. This will be a couple day trip with camping/tenting overnight in a campground (possibly Balsam Woods Campground) in Abbott and many many miles on logging trails to access the trains. After a short bit of research, this also requires a 1 to 2 mile hike into the site. We will also visit the B-52 crash site on Elephant Mountain near Lily Bay and the Onawa Trestle in Elliotsville during this trek. We will post more in depth details as we plan this over the next couple months but mark your calenders for this date

Invest in Tomorrow: Solving Child Poverty is Everyone’s Business.
3:00 p.m.
Please join us on Wednesday, March 29, as we publicly share the findings and strategic priority recommendations of the recently completed Comprehensive Community Assessment for Aroostook County. The report briefing will be part of a larger community solutions forum, Invest in Tomorrow: Solving Child Poverty is Everyone’s Business.
Join us to hear from local experts and discuss what we can do today to improve the future for Maine kids, our community, and our economy. Together we will start to answer the following questions that demand our collective attention and action:
What does child poverty look like in Aroostook County and in Maine?
How does child poverty affect us today?
What are some realistic, long-lasting solutions for the future?
As is evident by the organizations listed at the top of this page, a wide cross-section of regional and statewide groups in Maine have joined forces to host this forum and solve a problem that we all have a stake in at a critical time for our State. The regional forum, at Northern Maine Community College in Presque Isle, is one of only three planned across the state – and we want to engage as many people in the conversation as possible.
Taking steps to create opportunity and reduce barriers to employment for Maine families will improve their lives and contribute to the strength of Maine’s communities and our economy. Details of the northern Maine forum are as follows.
When: Wednesday, March 29th – 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Where: Northern Maine Community College, Edmunds Community Center
Please consider joining us to learn more about the opportunities and challenges facing northern Maine and to participate in a conversation about our region and state’s future. For more information or to confirm your participation, please contact Gloria Duncan at or 207-764-3721.

An evening of exceptional food, inspiration and blindfolds…
It’s not unusual to close your eyes and savour a bite of your favourite dish… but have you ever consumed an entire meal that way – replacing sight with touch, taste and texture?
Based on a restaurant concept popularized in Paris and New York, Dining in the Dark is a signature CNIB event where diners experience a meal without the use of their sight. Participants wear blindfolds for a unique, sensory experience in which they can explore their meal in a whole new way.
On March 31, 2017, CNIB will host its inaugural Dining in the Dark event at the Best Western Plus Woodstock Hotel & Conference Centre. The evening will include a three-course meal and, of course, blindfolds. Guests will have the chance to bid on extraordinary auction item prizes, and hear from inspiring individuals who will share their experiences living with vision loss. Tickets are $65 each.

William Haskell Rec Center Demolished

Presque Isle’s William Haskell Rec Center is now completely demolished.   The building was constructed in the 1940s as a United Service Organization club.

presque isle's william haskell rec center
The old Presque Isle Rec Center is torn down

The city of  Presque Isle bought the building in 1946, turning it into one of Maine’s first municipal recreation centers. William Haskell became Presque Isle’s first recreation director and held the position until his retirement in 1981.   He passed away in 1986 at the age of 73.  One year later, the building was renamed in his honor.

The new Sargent Family Community Center, which opened in Fall 2016, replaces the William Haskell building.  The gym in the new building is dedicated to Haskell.

Late last Fall we created a high-resolution 360 degree panorama inside the old building to help preserve it for historical purposes.  You can view the panorama here:
